ABSTRACT Nutrient prediction models applied to tree species from Brazilian Caatinga can be a crucial tool in understanding this biome. The study aimed to fit a mixed model to predict nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) content in tree species native to the Caatinga biome located in Floresta municipality, Pernambuco State – PE, Brazil. The following species were considered the area’s most important and evaluated in the present study: Poincianella bracteosa (Tul.) L.P.Queiroz, Mimosa ophtalmocentra Mart. ex Benth, Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart, Cnidoscolus quercifolius (Mull. Arg.) Pax. & Hoffm, and Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul. Four trees, representing the average circumference in each diameter class, were harvested for NPK quantification. The Spurr model was evaluated for NPK prediction, and species inclusion as a random effect was significant (p > 0.05) in all models. The Spurr model with fixed and random effects presented better statistics than fixed-effect models in all parameters for all nutrients. Generated NPK predicting equations can be a handy tool to understand the impact of wood extraction over Caatinga’s biogeochemical cycles and guide forest management strategies in semi-arid regions of the world.

RESUMO Modelos de predição de nutrientes aplicados a espécies arbóreas da Caatinga brasileira podem ser uma ferramenta crucial para a compreensão do bioma. O estudo teve como objetivo ajustar um modelo misto para prever os teores de nitrogênio (N), fósforo (P) e potássio (K) em espécies arbóreas nativas do bioma Caatinga localizadas no município de Floresta, Pernambuco – PE, Brasil. As seguintes espécies foram as mais importantes da área e avaliadas no presente estudo: Poincianella bracteosa (Tul.) L.P.Queiroz, Mimosa ophtalmocentra Mart. ex Benth, Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart, Cnidoscolus quercifolius (Mull. Arg.) Pax. & Hoffm e Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul. Quatro árvores, representando a circunferência média em cada classe de diâmetro, foram colhidas para quantificação de NPK. O modelo Spurr foi avaliado para predição de NPK e a inclusão de espécies como efeito aleatório foi significativa (p > 0,05) em todos os modelos. O modelo de Spurr com efeitos fixos e aleatórios apresentou estatísticas melhores que os modelos de efeito fixo em todos os parâmetros para todos os nutrientes. As equações de previsão de NPK geradas podem ser uma ferramenta útil para entender o impacto da extração de madeira sobre os ciclos biogeoquímicos da Caatinga e orientar estratégias de manejo florestal em regiões semiáridas do mundo.

Resumen La selva amazónica presenta diferentes estratos forestales, debido a su estructura heterogénea. En el que estos estratos pueden variar en altos, medios y bajos. El conocimiento de los diferentes patrones de estructuras verticales que se encuentran en el bosque es extremadamente importante para comprender la dinámica de la vegetación, lo que influye en las estrategias de conservación del bosque. Con el fin de optimizar el proceso de clasificación de los diferentes tipos de estratos, el objetivo del presente trabajo fue utilizar redes neuronales artificiales (RNA) para clasificar estos estratos. Se utilizaron dos algoritmos de resilient propagation (Rprop+ y Rprop-), en cuatro configuraciones diferentes de variables de entrada. El entrenamiento y la prueba de los ocho modelos de RNAs se realizaron utilizando el software R. Los modelos se evaluaron mediante una matriz de confusión. En qué modelos con entradas: HT, DAP y QF; HT, DAP y solo HT del algoritmo Rprop + obtuvieron 100% de aciertos en la clasificación de estrato, presentando una alta tasa de aprendizaje, confiabilidad y generalización de datos.

Abstract The Amazon forest presents different forest strata, due to its heterogeneous structure. In which these strata can vary in upper, middle and lower. Knowledge about the different patterns of vertical structures found in the forest is extremely important for understanding the vegetation dynamics, influencing forest conservation strategies. In order to optimize the process of classifying the different types of strata, the objective of the present work was to use artificial neural networks (ANNs) to classify these strata. Two resilient propagation algorithms (Rprop + and Rprop-) were used, in four different configurations of input variables. The training and testing of the eight RNA models were performed using the R software. The models were evaluated using a confusion matrix. In which models with inputs: HT, DAP and QF; HT, DAP and only HT from the Rprop + algorithm obtained 100% correct answers in the classification of strata. Demonstrating a high rate of learning, reliability and generalization of data.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the performance of artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machines (SVM) in volumetric modeling in eucalyptus stands. Data from commercial plantations, located in four municipalities in the southern mesoregion of the state of Amapá, were used and were provided by a private company. Volumetric models established in the literature were adjusted and compared with the SVM and ANN techniques. Data were divided into 80% for training and 20% for model validation. The same dendometric variables used by the regression models (DBH and height) were used by the SVM and ANN. For training and generalization of the SVM, four configurations were used, formed from two error functions and two Kernel functions. For configuration, training, and generalization of the ANN, the NeuroForest-Volumetric software was used, in which network configurations such as Adaline (Adaptive Linear Element) were used; Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Radial Base Functions (RBF). The quality of the adjustments of the regression models, and of the methodologies using ANN and SVM, were evaluated using the correlation coefficient between the observed and estimated individual volumes (ryŷ), the root mean square error, expressed as a percentage of the mean (RMSE%), and graphical analysis of residues (Res%). Considering the results, SVM and ANN performed slightly better, compared to the traditional methodology, in individual volume estimates, demonstrating that they are techniques that are well suited for applications in the area of measurement and forest management.

Resumo Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o desempenho de redes neurais artificiais (RNA) e máquinas de vetor de suporte (MVS) na modelagem volumétrica em povoamentos de eucalipto. Utilizou-se dados oriundos de plantios comerciais não desbastados, localizados em quatro municípios na mesorregião sul do estado do Amapá e foram disponibilizados por uma empresa privada. Foram ajustados modelos volumétricos consagrados na literatura e comparados com a técnica de MVS e de RNA. Os dados foram divididos em 80% para treinamento e 20% para validação dos modelos, as mesmas variáveis dendrométricas utilizadas pelos modelos de regressão (dap e altura) foram utilizadas pelas MVS e RNA. Para o treinamento e generalização das MVS, foram utilizadas quatro configurações, formadas a partir de duas funções de erro e duas funções de Kernel. Para configuração, treinamento e generalização das RNA, foi utilizado o software NeuroForest - Volumetric, no qual foram utilizadas configurações de redes do tipo Adaline (Adaptive Linear Element); Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) e Funções de Base Radial (RBF). A qualidade dos ajustes dos modelos de regressão, e das metodologias utilizando RNA e MVS, foram avaliadas utilizando-se o coeficiente de correlação entre os volumes individuais observados e estimados (ryŷ), a raiz quadrada do erro médio, expresso em porcentagem da média (RMSE%), análise gráfica dos resíduos (Res%). Considerando os resultados, MVS e RNA obtiveram desempenho ligeiramente melhores, comparados à metodologia tradicional, nas estimativas de volume individual, demonstrando serem técnicas que se adequaram bem para aplicações na área de mensuração e manejo florestal.

RESUMO O método BDq está baseado no conceito de floresta balanceada em que o crescimento corrente pode ser removido periodicamente enquanto se mantêm a distribuição de diâmetros inicial da floresta. O trabalho teve por objetivo analisar a viabilidade técnica na aplicação de três intensidades de corte e seis cenários em vegetação da Caatinga submetida ao manejo florestal sustentável. O trabalho foi desenvolvido na Fazendas Baixa da Oiticica, Rancho da Velha e Tabuleiro de Dentro, situados no município de Upanema -RN, com área de 343,0472 hectares submetidas ao manejo. No processo amostral foram alocadas 11 parcelas de 20 m x 20 m. Foram mensurados todos os indivíduos com circunferência a altura do peito (CAP) ≥ 6 cm. Os indivíduos foram identificados in loco, sendo adotado o sistema de classificação APG IV para organização da lista dos nomes científicos e famílias. Para a aplicação do método BDq, foram propostas três alternativas de manejo, com 40% (Cenário 1), 50% (Cenário 2) e 60% (Cenário 3) de redução da área basal e volume real. Inventariou-se 1.680 indivíduos distribuídos em 10 famílias, 18 espécies, 16 gêneros e sete classes de diâmetro. Levando em consideração a exploração racional, sustentável e, seguindo os preceitos teóricos dos processos dinâmicos, não pode realiza-se cortes nos centros de classes de maiores diâmetro (22,45; 27,45 e 32,45 cm) e, a combinação que apresentou os resultados mais efetivos foi o cenário 3, pois possibilita a exploração de um número maior de indivíduos conferindo maiores rendimentos econômicos.

ABSTRACT The BDq method is based on the concept of a balanced forest, in which the current growth can be periodically removed while maintaining the initial diameter distribution of the forest. This study aimed to analyze the technical feasibility in the application of three cutting intensities and six scenarios in sustainably managed Caatinga vegetation. The study was carried out at the Fazendas Baixa da Oiticica, Rancho da Velha, and Tabuleiro de Dentro, located in the municipality of Upanema (state of Rio Grande do Norte), with an area of around 343 hectares. We established 11 plots of 20 × 20 m and measured all individuals with a circumference at breast height (CBH) ≥ 6 cm within these plots. The individuals were identified in the field, and the APG IV classification system was adopted to organize the list of scientific names and families. Three management alternatives were proposed, namely reducing 40% (Scenario 1), 50% (Scenario 2), and 60% (Scenario 3) of the basal area and the actual volume for the application of the BDq method. In total, 1,680 individuals distributed in 10 families, 18 species, 16 genera, and 7 diameter classes were inventoried. Considering rational, sustainable harvesting, and following the theoretical rules of dynamic processes, cuts may not be carried out in larger diameter class centers (22.45, 27.45, and 32.45 cm). Scenario 3 showed the most effective results, as it allows the harvesting of the highest number of individuals and provides a greater economic return.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to compare different alternatives to estimate the stem volume of individual trees in four different forest formations in the Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The data were obtained in a forest inventory procedure performed by the Minas Gerais Technological Center Foundation. The stem volumes were computed by the Smalian expression up to the outside bark diameter equal to 4 cm. The volume data of outside bark, diameters (DBH) and total heights were used to fit a Schumacher and Hall equation for each forest formation, considering the structures of the linear fixed and mixed models. Next, 100 Multilayer Perceptron artificial neural networks (ANN) were trained in a supervised manner. In addition, we evaluated eight support-vector machine regression (SVMR). The criteria to evaluate the performance of all the alternatives studied were: the correlation between the observed and estimated volumes, the square root of the mean square error and the frequency distribution by percentage relative error class. After the analyzes, all the alternatives were verified to estimate the volume of the individual trees in the different forest formations. Although the alternatives presented close statistics in the validation process, the graphical analysis of the error distribution showed greater precision of the estimates of the mixed linear models for the four formations. Given the results, it is concluded that there is no absolute superiority of one alternative over the others, and that all of them should be evaluated to find the one which best describes or explains the dataset.

O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi avaliar se a densidade de ocorrência de andirobeiras é dependente da distância do rio Amazonas, analisando sua distribuição espacial e a estrutura diamétrica da população em um trecho de floretas de várzea no Estado do Amapá. Esse trabalho faz parte do projeto Florestam (Ecologia e manejo florestal para uso múltiplo de várzeas do estuário amazônico) e foi desenvolvido em uma área de proteção ambiental (APA) de 136,59 ha, localizada no Distrito da Fazendinha, município de Macapá - AP (00°03'04,24"S e 51º07'42,72"W). Foram lançados 3 transectos perpendiculares à margem do rio Amazonas, distanciados entre si a cada 500 m, para orientar no direcionamento e localização das árvores. Todas as andirobeiras com (CAP) circunferência a altura do peito ≥ 15 cm foram inventariadas e mapeadas, anotando-se o (CAP) e o número da árvore em uma ficha de campo. A influência da distância do rio sobre a densidade das andirobeiras foi analisada por regressão linear. O número de classes diamétricas foi definido conforme Higushi. Foi testado o ajuste da distribuição dos diâmetros das andirobeiras ao modelo exponencial de Meyer. Foi calculado o quociente q de De Liocourt, tanto para a frequência observada quanto para a estimada. Calculou-se o índice de Morisita, variância/média e índice de agregação para se inferir sobre a distribuição espacial. Foram inventariadas 680 andirobeiras produtivas e não produtivas, com uma área basal de 55,84 m2, gerando uma densidade de 5 árvores ha-1. Quanto à distribuição diamétrica, foram geradas 9 classes de diâmetro com 11 cm de amplitude, sendo que o coeficiente de determinação para o modelo exponencial foi de 0,93 e o quociente q = 2,03. Os índices utilizados mostraram que a distribuição espacial das andirobeiras adultas ocorre de forma agregada. A estrutura diamétrica das andirobeiras mostra que há elevada quantidade de regenerantes e que a população não está senescente. A densidade de andirobeiras adultas é dependente da distância do rio, com maior concentração de árvores em áreas mais distantes do rio Amazonas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the density of occurrence of andirobeiras is dependent of the Amazon River distance, analyzing their spatial distribution and diameter structure of the population in a floodplain forest in Amapá state, Brazilian Amazon. This work is part of 'Florestam' project (ecology and forest management for the multiple use of the floodplains of the Amazon estuary).This study was conducted in an environment protected area of 136.59 ha, located in Fazendinha district, city of Macapá, AP state (00º03'04, 24 "S and 51º 07'42, 72" W). Three transects perpendicular to the Amazon river were launched, apart from each other every 500 m, to guide the direction and location of trees. All andirobeiras with (CBH) circumference at breast height ≥ 15 cm were inventoried and mapped. The number of diameter classes was defined according to Higushi. We tested the fit of andirobeira diameter distribution to the exponential model by Meyer. We calculated the ratio q of De Liocourt for the observed and for the estimated frequencies. We calculated Morisita index, variance/mean ratio, and aggregation to infer the spatial distribution. Six hundred and eighty productive and unproductive andirobeiras were inventoried with a basal area of 55.84 m2, generating a density of 5 trees ha-1.The diameter distribution were generated with 9 classes of 11 cm diameter range and the determination coefficient for the exponential model was 0.93 and the quotient q = 2.03.The indices used showed that the spatial distribution of adult andirobeiras occurs in the aggregate form. The andirobeira diameter structure shows great number of young individuals and that the population is not senescent. The density of adult andirobeiras depends on the river distance, with the greatest concentration of trees in more remote areas of Amazon River.
